Obama vows to reverse executive orders that ‘trample on liberty’

Associated Press
Published: Tuesday July 29, 2008

WASHINGTON – Barack Obama told House Democrats on Tuesday that as president he would order his attorney general to scour White House executive orders and expunge any that “trample on liberty,” several lawmakers said.

Presidents, as head of the executive branch of government, issue such orders to direct operations of executive branch agencies, like the Justice Department and the CIA. For example, President Bush used an executive order last year to breathe new life into the CIA’s controversial terror interrogation program that allowed harsh questioning of suspects.

Obama “talked about how his attorney general is to review every executive order and immediately eliminate those that trample on liberty,” said Rep. Jerrold Nadler, D-N.Y.

“He indicated there would be a review in his administration,” said Rep. James Clyburn, D-S.C., the House majority whip.

Obama did not mention executive orders when he addressed reporters who waited for him outside the closed-door meeting. He said only that he would be campaigning alongside members to win the presidency and help expand Democratic majorities in the House and Senate.

“I am looking forward to collaborating with everyone here to win the election, but more importantly to collaborate with everybody here and also some like-minded Republicans to actually govern and to deliver on behalf of the American people,” Obama said.

During his presidency, Bush increasingly has relied on executive orders to dictate policies without seeking congressional approval. His orders have ranged from restrictions on striped bass fishing to sanctions against Myanmar’s government.

Obama did not indicate who his attorney general would be, or any other member of his Cabinet. To lawmakers who asked about his Cabinet plans, Obama said: “Get me elected, and then I’ll worry about the Cabinet,” according to Nadler.

Clyburn added that Obama said there were “people in the room with more expertise than him.”

Obama’s meeting with the House Democratic caucus came hours after he spoke with both Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson and Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke about the faltering economy, part of his effort to refocus the campaign on domestic issues after last week’s foreign trip.

Obama spokesman Michael Ortiz said the senator and Bernanke discussed the outlook for consumers and businesses, as well as the effect of rising home foreclosures on families nationwide. They also talked about the “strengths of Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac and other financial institutions,” Ortiz said.

Obama called Paulson as he rode to a meeting with Pakistan’s new prime minister, the campaign said.

A campaign statement said Obama asked how the Treasury Department planned to use its new authority with Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac and whether the government had the tools it needs to address the challenges in the banking industry. As part of the government’s effort to provide mortgage relief to hundreds of thousands of homeowners, Paulson has sought emergency power to rescue lending giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.

Congress approved a housing plan last week that would provide relief for 400,000 homeowners who can’t afford their payments by allowing them to refinance their mortgages with more affordable, government-backed loans. President Bush has promised to sign the package into law.

In a day of meetings, Obama also met with Pakistan’s new leader, Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani.

At a fundraising luncheon, he said he told Gilani “the only way we’re going to be successful in the long term in defeating extremists … is if we are giving people opportunities. If people have a chance for a better life, then they are not as likely to turn to the ideologies of violence and despair.”

Father of North American Community concedes dream ‘is dead’
Says critics have blocked alignment of U.S., Mexico and Canada

North American Model Parliament

The Security and Prosperity Partnership of North America is dead, says Robert A. Pastor, the American University professor who for more than a decade has been a major proponent of building a North American Community.

“The new president will probably discard the SPP,” Pastor wrote in an article titled “The Future of North America,” published in the current July/August issue of the Council on Foreign Relations magazine Foreign Affairs.

The SPP, which critics contend is a step toward a North American Union, is an agreement to increase cooperation on security and economic issues signed by the leaders of the U.S., Mexico and Canada in 2005. Despite having no authorization from Congress, the Bush administration launched extensive working-group activity to implement the agreement. The working groups – ranging from e-commerce, to aviation policy, to borders and immigration – have counterparts in Mexico and Canada.

“The April summit meeting was probably the last hurrah for the SPP,” Pastor wrote, referring to the fourth annual SPP meeting held in April in New Orleans.

Pastor attributes the failure of SPP to its largely bureaucratic nature and the decision policy makers made to keep SPP largely below the radar of public opinion.

“The strategy of acting on technical issues in an incremental, bureaucratic way and keeping the issues away from public view has generated more suspicion than accomplishments,” Pastor admitted.

Pastor blames critics for the failure of the SPP, charging it has come under attack from both ends of the political spectrum.

“From the right have come attacks based on cultural anxieties of being overrun by Mexican immigrants and fears that cooperation with Canada and Mexico could lead down a slippery slope toward a North American Union,” he wrote. “From the left came attacks based on economic fears of jobs lost due to unfair trading practices.”

“These two sets of fears came together in a perfect storm that was pushed forward by a surplus of hot air from talk-show hosts on radio and television,” he continued. “In the face of this criticism, the Bush administration was silent, and the Democratic candidates competed for votes in the rust-belt states, where unions and many working people have come to see NAFTA and globalization much as (commentator Lou) Dobbs does.”

Pastor denied he had ever urged the creation of a North American Union.

“Dobbs, among others, viewed a report by a 2005 Council on Foreign Relations task force (which I chaired), ‘Building a North American Community,’ as the manifesto of a conspiracy to subvert American sovereignty,” he asserted. “Dobbs claimed that the CFR study proposed a North American Union, although it did not.”

Pastor has argued consistently for a “North American Community,” as suggested by the title of his 2001 book entitled “Toward a North American Community.”

In a commentary authored for WND, Pastor stressed, “I do not propose a North American Union; I propose a North American Community.”

Pastor argued the two were different in that North American Community would involve “three sovereign governments that seek to strengthen bonds of cooperation.”

Noting that the European Community was a transitional state between the European Common Market and the European Union, Pastor conceded to WND that, “I don’t think a political union of North America is an inherently bad idea, nor do I think it is a good idea for right now.”

Despite the SPP setback, Pastor remains determined to advise a different approach to his continued goal of integrating the U.S., Mexico and Canada into a North American Community.

“The three heads of state must also commit to building a new consciousness, a new way of thinking about one’s neighbors and about the continental agenda,” he said. “Americans, Canadians and Mexicans can be nationals and North Americans at the same time.”

To correct the defects of the SPP bureaucratic closed-door process, Pastor’s CFR article recommended creating new North American institutions, including a North American Investment Fund of at least $20 billion a year “to connect central and southern Mexico to the United States with roads, ports, and communications.”

Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, dropped his support for Senate bill 3622 in the 109th Congress when WND reported the North American Investment Fund proposed by the legislation would enact a key proposal Pastor has frequently made for advancing his North American Community agenda.

In his CFR article, Pastor also called for the continuation of annual North American heads-of-state summits and the appointment in the next administration of a national adviser for North American affairs, who would chair a cabinet-level committee to formulate a comprehensive plan for North America.

Pastor also encouraged creating a dozen university centers for North American studies “to educate a new generation of students to think North American.”

WND reported on the fourth annual North American Model Parliament held this year in Montreal, Canada, for 100 university students from the U.S., Canada and Mexico.

The North American Model Parliament is sponsored by the North American Forum on Integration, on which Pastor serves as a board member.

Collapse of the American Empire

It is quite ironic: only a decade or so after the idea of the United States as an imperial power came to be accepted by both right and left, and people were actually able to talk openly about an American empire, it is showing multiple signs of its inability to continue. And indeed it is now possible to contemplate, and openly speculate about, its collapse.

The neocons in power in Washington these days, those who were delighted to talk about America as the sole empire in the world following the Soviet disintegration, will of course refuse to believe in any such collapse, just as they ignore the realities of the imperial war in Iraq. But I think it behooves us to examine seriously the ways in which the U.S. system is so drastically imperiling itself that it will cause not only the collapse of its worldwide empire but drastically alter the nation itself on the domestic front.

All empires collapse eventually: Akkad, Sumeria, Babylonia, Ninevah, Assyria, Persia, Macedonia, Greece, Carthage, Rome, Mali, Songhai, Mongonl, Tokugawaw, Gupta, Khmer, Hapbsburg, Inca, Aztec, Spanish, Dutch, Ottoman, Austrian, French, British, Soviet, you name them, they all fell, and most within a few hundred years. The reasons are not really complex. An empire is a kind of state system that inevitably makes the same mistakes simply by the nature of its imperial structure and inevitably fails because of its size, complexity, territorial reach, stratification, heterogeneity, domination, hierarchy, and inequalities.

In my reading of the history of empires, I have come up with four reasons that almost always explain their collapse. (Jared Diamond’s new book Collapse also has a list of reasons for societal collapse, slightly overlapping, but he is talking about systems other than empires.) Let me set them out, largely in reference to the present American empire.

First, environmental degradation. Empires always end by destroying the lands and waters they depend upon for survival, largely because they build and farm and grow without limits, and ours is no exception, even if we have yet to experience the worst of our assault on nature. Science is in agreement that all important ecological indicators are in decline and have been for decades: erosion of topsoils and beaches, overfishing, deforestation, freshwater and aquifer depletion, pollution of water, soil, air, and food, soil salinization, overpopulation , overconsumption, depletion of oil and minerals, introduction of new diseases and invigoration of old ones, extreme weather, melting icecaps and rising sealevels, species extinctions, and excessive human overuse of the earth’s photosynthetic capacity. As the Harvard biologist E.O. Wilson has said, after lengthy examination of human impact on the earth, our “ecological footprint is already too large for the planet to sustain, and it is getting larger.” A Defense Department study last year predicted “abrupt climate change,” likely to occur within a decade, will lead to “catastrophic” shortages of water and energy, endemic “disruption and conflict,” warfare that “would define human life,” and a “significant drop” in the planet’s ability to sustain its present population. End of empire for sure, maybe end of civilization.

Second, economic meltdown. Empires always depend on excessive resource exploitation, usually derived from colonies farther and farther away from the center, and eventually fall when the resources are exhausted or become too expensive for all but the elite. This is exactly the path we are on-peak oil extraction, for example, is widely predicted to come in the next year or two-and our economy is built entirely on a fragile system in which the world produces and we, by and large, consume (U.S. manufacturing is just 13 per cent of our GDP). At the moment we sustain a nearly $630 billion trade deficit with the rest of the world-it has leapt by an incredible $500 billion since 1993, and $180 billion since Bush took office in 2001-and in order to pay for that we have to have an inflow of cash from the rest of the world of about $1 billion every day to pay for it, which was down by half late last year. That kind of excess is simply unsustainable, especially when you think that it is the other world empire, China, that is crucial for supporting it, at the tune of some $83 billion on loan to the U.S. treasury.

Add to that an economy resting on a nearly $500 billion Federal budget deficit, making up part of a total national debt of $7.4 trillion as of last fall, and the continual drain on the economy by the military of at least $530 billion a year (not counting military intelligence, whose figure we never know). Nobody thinks that is sustainable either, which is why the dollar has lost value everywhere-down by 30 per cent against the euro since 2000-and the world begins to lose faith in investment here. I foresee that in just a few years the dollar will be so battered that the oil states will no longer want to operate in that currency and will turn to the euro instead, and China will let the yuan float against the dollar, effectively making this nation bankrupt and powerless, unable to control economic life within its borders much less abroad.

, military overstretch. Empires, because they are by definition colonizers, are always forced to extend their military reach farther and farther, and enlarge it against unwilling colonies more and more, until coffers are exhausted, communication lines are overextended, troops are unreliable, and the periphery resists and ultimately revolts. The American empire, which began its worldwide reach well before Bush II, now has some 446,000 active troops at more than 725 acknowledged (and any number secret) bases in at least 38 countries around the world, plus a formal “military presence” in no less than 153 countries, on every continent but Antarctica-and nearly a dozen fully armed courier fleets on all the oceans. Talk about overstretch: the U.S. is less than 5 per cent of the world’s population. And now that Bush has declared a “war on terror,” instead of the more doable war on Al Quada we should have waged, our armies and agents will be on a battlefield universal and permanent that cannot possibly be controlled or contained.

So far that military network has not collapsed, but as Iraq indicates it is mightily tested and quite incapable of establishing client states to do our bidding and protect resources we need. And as anti-American sentiment continues to spread and darken-in all the Muslim countries, in much of Europe, in much of Asia-and as more countries refuse the “structural adjustments” that our IMF-led globalization requires, it is quite likely that the periphery of our empire will begin resisting our dominance, militarily if necessary. And far from having a capacity to fight two wars simultaneously, as the Pentagon once hoped, we are proving that we can’t even fight one.

Finally, domestic dissent and upheaval. Traditional empires end up collapsing from within as well as often being attacked from without, and so far the level of dissent within the U.S. has not reached the point of rebellion or secession-thanks both to the increasing repression of dissent and escalation of fear in the name of “homeland security” and to the success of our modern version of bread and circuses, a unique combination of entertainment, sports, television, internet sex and games, consumption, drugs, liquor, and religion that effectively deadens the general public into stupor. But the tactics of the Bush II administration show that it is so fearful of an expression of popular dissent that it is willing to defy and ignore environmental, civil-rights, and progressive groups, to bribe commentators to put out its propaganda, to expand surveillance and data-base invasions of privacy, to use party superiority and backroom tactics to ride roughshod over Congressional opposition, to use lies and deceptions as a normal part of government operations, to break international laws and treaties for short-term ends, and to use religion to cloak its every policy.

It’s hard to believe that the great mass of the American public would ever bestir itself to challenge the empire at home until things get much, much worse. It is a public, after all, of which, as a Gallup poll in 2004 found, 61 per cent believe that “religion can answer all or most of today’s problems,” and according to a Time/CNN poll in 2002 59 per cent believe in the imminent apocalypse foretold in the Book of Revelation and take every threat and disaster as evidence of God’s will. And yet, it’s also hard to believe that a nation so thoroughly corrupt as this-in all its fundamental institutions, its boughten parties, academies, corporations, brokerages, accountants, governments-and resting on a social and economic base of intolerably unequal incomes and property, getting increasingly unequal, will be able to sustain itself for long. The upsurge in talk about secession after the last election, some of which was deadly serious and led on to organizations throughout most of the blue states, indicates that at least a minority is willing to think about drastic steps to “alter or abolish” a regime it finds itself fundamentally at odds with.

Those four processes by which empires always eventually fall seem to me to be inescapably operative, in varying degrees, in this latest empire. And I think a combination of several or all of them will bring about its collapse within the next 15 years or so.

Jared Diamond’s recent book detailing the ways societies collapse suggests that American society, or industrial civilization as a whole, once it is aware of the dangers of its current course, can learn from the failures of the past and avoid their fates. But it will never happen, and for a reason Diamond himself understands.

As he says, in his analysis of the doomed Norse society on Greenland that collapsed in the early 15th century: “The values to which people cling most stubbornly under inappropriate conditions are those values that were previously the source of their greatest triumphs over adversity.” If this is so, and his examples would seem to prove it, then we can isolate the values of American society that have been responsible for its greatest triumphs and know that we will cling to them no matter what. They are, in one rough mixture, capitalism, individualism, nationalism, technophilia, and humanism (as the dominance of humans over nature). There is no chance whatever, no matter how grave and obvious the threat, that as a society that we will abandon those.

Hence no chance to escape the collapse of empire.

Lowest of the low

PM ignores lowly approval rating, adopts scorched-earth policy to save himself

Published: 07.27.08, 17:23 / Israel Opinion

How low can one go? When it comes to math, the bottom is infinite; in politics, the bottom is zero – and Prime Minister Ehud Olmert is very close to getting there: In the latest public opinion poll undertaken by the Dahaf Institute and Dr. Mina Tzemach on behalf of Yedioth Ahronoth, only 6% of Israelis said Olmert is fit to be a PM.

This figure should be read a few times in order to grasp its full implication: 94 out of every 100 Israeli adults believe Olmert is not worthy of being a prime minister. This is the lowest figure ever for an elected prime minister in Israel or any other democratic country.

Full story
Popularity is one thing, but look at his credibility: Only 12% of Israel’s citizens trust their prime minister either wholly or partly. Meanwhile, 86% of Israelis say Olmert is untrustworthy.

In the past, I analyzed the public opinion polls undertaken by Dr. Tzemach for Yedioth Ahronoth. Ariel Sharon was the king of credibility: He was perceived as a trustworthy prime minister by 66% to 82% of Israelis. Even Ehud Barak and Benjamin Netanyahu, on the verge of an election defeat, maintained minimal credibility levels of 35% to 45%.

As it turns out, Moshe Talansky’s cross-examination, which was supposed to “shatter” the witness and his testimony, hurt Olmert. For 60% of Israelis, the Talansky cross-examination lowered their trust in the prime minister, while only 2% said it boosted their level of trust. Talansky’s credibility is three times higher than Olmert’s.

In his frenzied briefings over the weekend, Olmert attempted to attribute the complete collapse in his public credibility to police and State Prosecutor’s Office conspiracies. He said these two institutions set their sights on him and are “eliminating him.”

Olmert keeps on whining

When it comes to the Olmert affair, the Prosecutor’s Office erred often, and some of those mistakes are outrageous, unforgivable, and require deep procedural revisions. The police also stumbled here and there, although less so. Yet the prime minister’s claims that the police and Prosecutor’s Office, including dozens of their senior figures, are conspiring to oust him are unfounded.

I already said it before: If this is what the PM believes, he should immediately order the Shin Bet to detain the top police brass, senior Prosecutor’s Office officials, and the attorney general on charges of subversion and national treason. This is what Olmert would do had he suspected of a conspiracy for an IDF putsch.

Yet the fact that Olmert just keeps on whining (like any other person under investigation) in the media attests both to the insincerity of his claims as well as to the personal fears that overcome him as the day of his indictment approaches. The public doesn’t buy into his whining. According to the poll, 50% of Israelis believe that the police are credible, and 57% believe that the Prosecutor’s Office is credible. As we recall, only 12% believe Olmert is trustworthy.

It is clear what Olmert aspires for: A situation where he can argue that, under the circumstances that have been created, he cannot get a fair trial in the State of Israel – after all, he was already “court-martialed” and his “verdict has been decided through leaks to the media” – therefore, he will ask to immediately annul the indictment against him. Or perhaps he’ll ask to be tried by the International Court at The Hague?

Olmert is adopting a scorched-earth policy. In order to save himself, for selfish reasons, he does not hesitate to undermine law enforcement institutions in Israel. He has implicitly also threatened the police and Prosecutor’s Office – threats that would land a less distinguished suspect in jail.

The prime minister’s behavior is damaging for everyone, including himself: Because of it, 94% of Israelis want another prime minister today.

Report: Surviving EMP to depend on preparation
‘Many people may die for lack of basic elements necessary’

A report from the federal Commission to Assess the Threat to the United States from Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP) Attack has painted a bleak picture for America under such attack: Electricity grids down, uncontrolled fires from exploding gas transport systems, no communication to summon firefighters and if they could come, no water to battle fires. All in city after city after city.

The 200-page report says Americans should look to past incidents, then multiply those impacts by the number of cities that could be hit by such an attack. For example:

San Diego County Water Authority and San Diego County Gas and Electric companies experienced severe electromagnetic interference. … Both companies found themselves unable to actuate critical valve openings and closings. This inability necessitated sending technicians to remote locations to manually open and close water and gas valves, averting, in the words of a subsequent letter of complaint by the San Diego County Water Authority to the Federal Communications Commission, a potential ‘catastrophic failure’ of the aqueduct system.

The report explained the potential impact could have included an “aqueduct rupture” with disruption of service, severe flooding and related damage to private and public property. The source of the 1999 problem? Errant radar on a ship 25 miles off the coast of San Diego, the report said.

The report, published on the commission website, cited other scenarios that should be expected to develop subsequent to an EMP attack on the U.S.

On Aug. 19, 2000, an explosion occurred on one of three adjacent large natural gas pipelines near Carlsbad, N.M., … Twelve people, including five children, died. The explosion left an 86-foot-long crater. … The explosion happened because of failures in maintenance and loss of situational awareness, conditions that would be replicated by data acquisition disruptions caused by an EMP event.

The report also cited a 1994 refinery disaster in the United Kingdom in which lightning strikes resulted in a half-second power loss.

“Consequently, numerous pumps and overhead fin-fan coolers tripped repeatedly, resulting in the main crude column pressure safety valves lifting and major upsets in the process units in other refinery units … There was an explosion in the FCC unit and a number of isolated fires. … As a result of this incident, an estimated 10 percent of the total refining capacity in the United Kingdom was lost until this complex was returned to service.”

WND has reported several times on the threat of EMP attacks, including just two weeks ago when William R. Graham, chairman of the commission, told the House Armed Services Committee an EMP attack is “one of a small number of threats that can hold our society at risk of catastrophic consequences.”

Not taking the steps necessary to reduce the threat in the next three to five years “can both invite and reward attack,” Graham told the committee.

The scariest and most threatening kind of EMP attack is initiated by the detonation of a nuclear weapon at high altitude in the range of 25 to 250 miles above the Earth’s surface. The immediate effects of EMP are disruption of, and damage to, electronic systems and electrical infrastructure. Such a detonation over the middle of the continental U.S. “has the capability to produce significant damage to critical infrastructures that support the fabric of U.S. society and the ability of the United States and Western nations to project influence and military power,” said Graham.

“Several potential adversaries have the capability to attack the United States with a high-altitude nuclear weapon-generated electromagnetic pulse, and others appear to be pursuing efforts to obtain that capability,” said Graham. “A determined adversary can achieve an EMP attack capability without having a high level of sophistication. For example, an adversary would not have to have long-range ballistic missiles to conduct an EMP attack against the United States. Such an attack could be launched from a freighter off the U.S. coast using a short- or medium-range missile to loft a nuclear warhead to high altitude. Terrorists sponsored by a rogue state could attempt to execute such an attack without revealing the identity of the perpetrators. Iran, the world’s leading sponsor of international terrorism, has practiced launching a mobile ballistic missile from a vessel in the Caspian Sea. Iran has also tested high-altitude explosions of the Shahab-III, a test mode consistent with EMP attack, and described the tests as successful. Iranian military writings explicitly discuss a nuclear EMP attack that would gravely harm the United States. While the commission does not know the intention of Iran in conducting these activities, we are disturbed by the capability that emerges when we connect the dots.”

The committee’s report analyzes the impact of an attack on electrical supplies, telecommunications, banking and finance, petroleum and natural gas, transportation, food, water, emergency services, space systems and government.

The news was dire throughout. The electrical grid, for example, is needed to distribute water, food, fuel, communications, transport, financial transactions, emergency services and government services.

“Should significant parts of the electrical power infrastructure be lost for any substantial period of time, the commission believes that the consequences are likely to be catastrophic, and many people may ultimately die for lack of the basic elements necessary to sustain life in dense urban and suburban communities,” the report said.

“In fact, the commission is deeply concerned that such impacts are likely in the event of an EMP attack unless practical steps are taken to provide protection for critical elements of the electric system and for rapid restoration of electric power, particular to essential services,” the report said.

Current disaster preparedness and recovery plans “may be of little or no value” under an EMP attack because of the length of time it would take to obtain and install replacement parts or repair other damage.

The cascade of trouble would be significant. No electricity would mean out-of-control water, natural gas or fuel flows through distribution systems. Some explosions likely would happen, fires could ignite. But no emergency services could be contacted for help, and if they already were on scene, it’s unlikely water would be ready. Even worse, when such fires burn themselves out, and repairs are begun, supplies could neither be ordered nor delivered because of communications and fuel disruptions, and the critical workers needed for repairs might not be able to get to the location.

At some point, repair and recovery simply become impossible, the report said.

“There is a point in time at which the shortage or exhaustion of critical items like emergency power supply, batteries, standby fuel supplies, replacement parts, and manpower resources which can be coordinated and dispatched, together with the degradation of all other infrastructures and their systemic impact, all lead toward a collapse of restoration capability.

“Society will transition into a situation where restoration needs increase with time as resources degrade and disappear,” the report warned.

It is the first report from the commission since 2004 and identifies vulnerabilities in the nation’s critical infrastructures, “which are essential to both our civilian and military capabilities.”

Graham also had warned Congress such an attack could come without the backing of an international power, such as China or Russia.

Theoretically, an EMP attack is devastating because of the unprecedented cascading failures of major infrastructures that could result. Because of America’s heavy reliance on electricity and electronics, the impact would be far worse than on a country less advanced technologically

Graham took the EMP debate out of the realm of science fiction by reminding the committee that as recently as May 1999, during the NATO bombing of Yugoslavia, Russian leaders threatened a U.S. congressional delegation with the specter of an attack that would paralyze the U.S.

He also quoted James J. Shinn, assistant secretary of defense for Asian and Pacific Security, who several weeks ago told the same House committee that China’s arms buildup includes exotic experiments with electromagnetic weapons that can devastate electronics with bursts of energy similar to those produced by a nuclear blast.

“The consequence of EMP is that you destroy the communications network,” Shinn said. “And we are, as you know, and as the Chinese know, heavily dependent on sophisticated communications, satellite communications, in the conduct of our forces. And so, whether it’s from an EMP or it’s some kind of a coordinated [anti-satellite] effort, we could be in a very bad place if the Chinese enhanced their capability in this area.”

Graham says terrorists who get their hands on one or a few unsophisticated nuclear weapons might well calculate they could get the most bang for their buck from attempting an EMP attack.

Ultimate recovery from an EMP attack could end up taking years, during which time America very well may have to exist without many high-tech services, from cell phones inoperable due to damaged towers unrepaired because of parts shortages to a disruption in the food supply path because of fuel shortages.

“A serious national commitment to address the threat of an EMP attack can lead to a national posture that would significantly reduce the payoff for such an attack and allow the United States to recover from EMP, and from other threats, man-made and natural, to the critical infrastructures,” Graham told the committee.

Stanley Ann Dunham’s Revenge

By Lame Cherry

Almost 48 years ago, a young girl transplanted from Kansas decided in her comfortable life that she would take revenge on her white, American, Christian soldier father for the humiliation she endured in being named a boy.

She remembered the playground days of yearly the teacher would announce, Stanley Dunham in the first day of school’s roll call and how she would have to explain she was not a boy. Then would come the long questions on the public classroom stage and the taunting from children later “Stanley, panly the girl is manly”.

She remembered her driver’s test, the birth certificate all glaring at her the name Stanley Ann Dunham, the boy her father never had and the name she was humiliated by.

There is not a person reading this who did not suffer through the same thing.

Normal children though frown over it. Normal teenagers shrug over it and normal adults just laugh over such things, but Stanley Ann Dunham was not normal and nor did she raise a normal son.

Ms. Dunham though chose the most childish of measures not quite figuring out she would be punishing herself as much as her family, but when teenage girls search for love and revenge the psychological choice is sex with a naughty boy and a bouncing baby so they will not be alone in the misery of the world.

Stanley could not have found a better choice for her target of revenge and must have almost got the vapors. Here she had Barack Hussein Obama, a man so black from Africa and so communist that if could hide in the dark if he didn’t smile, except for that big red communist flag he had on wearing a white Muslim turban heritage.

Stanley had her package of racism to betray her white parents as she had been betrayed, traitor to offset her father’s patriotism and the most wonderful of guess who is coming home to dinner.

Stanley Ann Dunham had her revenge and had it in spades.

As with most revenge plans which are served up in passionated hotness, Stanley had a bit of a surprise as her husband was already married and then he dumped her.
A shotgun marriage did not appeal to Barack sr. as no one is mentioning arithmetic in this that Barack was born on August 4th, 1961, his lusty parents were married on February 2, 1961 as Stanley apparently was starting to show from the fornicating November 2, 1960.
Yes Barack Obama was a miracle baby otherwise in being full term at 7 months.

Stanley was born on November 29, 1942, common math would show that Stanley Ann Dunham was 17, and although Hawaii is a pedophile’s dream in the age of consent is logged at 14 years old in 1961, it remains a fact that a 24 year old college male was sexing a 17 year old high school girl.

Not a great thing on the presidential resume, but the story continues.

So, Stanley was sitting alone again in her pregnant misery, but decided she could gain some extra mileage by going to Canada and having her son registered as a British subject in one final slap at baseball, hotdogs, apple pie and Chevrolet.

This conclusion is based upon Barack jr. having put forward a forged birth certificate out of Hawaii, he being registered not as “born” but a live birth which appeared at two hospitals and the circumstances which point that Stanley Ann Duhman Soetoro did the same thing when she repeated her performance and married an Indonesian Muslim in exercising her demons, as Maya, Barack’s half sister is listed as being born in the months of August and September.

Registering babies late when born in other countries seems a Stanley trait.

The years then rolled by and revenge becomes very stale and cold as you daily look at a black boy who reminds you not just of his black father getting the better part of sex and dumping you, but that this boy is a reminder of how moronic you are.

A woman just can not dive into primitive cultures and get enough degrees to shed that fact.

So excuses are made after indoctrinating him in Islam, and, as the final revenge as her parents demanded that Barry be illegally registered as an American, Stanley dumped this little boy onto her white parents to punish them as a reminder which would cut them daily into how she failed them.
Her id would say, “You wanted a son so bad daddy, well have a black one in your Christian virtue that you can’t turn out as you love him like family. Enjoy.”

……….and Stanley Ann Dunham had her revenge.

The story though continued as little boys still love their mothers and as they try to figure out why mommy abandoned them they find an Uncle Frank Marshall Davis who is a communist kook who hates white people, Christians and America to try and tailor himself into that dark skinned man mommy always marries.

Yes, Oedipus Rex was alive and well in the troubled messiah to be Barry Obama.

Barry though would leave the Barry behind as he plunged into understanding how to deal with “white folk” grandparents and that colleges and white girls just liked the exotic nature of the Barack Hussein Obama aura fiction.

Barack being still psychologically scarred would tire of white girls, find a black image of his mother’s hatred in his wife Michelle, find black clergy who would espouse hatred for America and surround himself with terrorists of American and Middle Eastern sort.

Still though the emptiness would not end.

So, in addition there was drug use, which still is an addiction to nicotine as he self medicates in chain smoking and the little problem of Lawrence Sinclair and other white males who Barack Obama was choosing to replay in his own way his mother’s psychopathy, but in Lawrence Sinclair he could dominate a white man who was serving him. Barack would measure his own revenge out, too.

In those moments, Barack Obama had lulls in the emptiness.

As this now turns to the present, we see that Stanley Ann Dunham is about to unleash her final revenge on the nation, religion and people she so loathed.
She produced a son and turned him into an indoctrinated pawn let loose on the world where a willing cartel plucked him up and groomed the troubled adult child knowing he could be manipulated and blackmailed.

Mr. Obama was never intended to be anything, but a “bring in the black vote candidate”. He though being adopted as white Kennedy and now as a Polish Brzezinski has reams of fathers and finally by being President in his mind he will find the salve to be accepted and he can tell himself that mommy would accept him now.
Barack always wanted to be president of some nation as a child, not America, but some nation. He wanted to be empowered and accepted, because he was not getting that at home.

Stanley Ann Dunham’s revenge is still playing out on America. Barack is suffering from a number of psychopathies and as his current transformation shows he is leaving being a black liberal to be a white socialist all for the cure he will deny himself for, but reveals he is not ready to be leader of anything.

Stanley Ann Dunham’s revenge as this plays out is not going to be revenge on white America, Christian America or Patriotic America. She created a boy who when he fails will so destroy the profile of minorities that America will not advance them again for a generation.

If this was in her racism of using black people was what Ms. Dunham wanted, it is doubtful as she did not expect anything out of Barack really. He was always just that symbol which liberal women check off in career, husbands and 2.1 children.

Stanley is though one woman in revenge who will have revenge on her son, on Americans white and black. And if he gains the White House, probably on the world as she never saw that she was the problem…and was blaming her own warped hurts on that cruel world out there.

None of this is going to have a good ending, but Stanley Ann Dunham will have her revenge on all.

Why Democrats don’t want to lower gas prices

Senator lets cat out of the bag on Bloomberg TV show

Sen. Maria Cantwell, D-Wash.
WASHINGTON – A Democratic senator on the Energy and Natural Resources Committee inadvertently explained why her colleagues have no intention of ending the moratorium on offshore oil drilling or increasing the areas open for exploration and production – no matter how popular the idea might be with gas prices soaring.

In an interview with Bloomberg TV’s “Money and Politics” last night, Sen. Maria Cantwell, D-Wash., explained Democrats don’t want to increase supplies of oil and gasoline because they want to wean Americans off of petroleum products.

Asked point-blank if Democrats in the Senate would consider how increasing the supply of oil would lower the prices that are pinching U.S. consumers, Cantwell replied: “Oh, we definitely want to move beyond petroleum. And so there will be a supply side offered by the Democrats and it will include everything from battery technology to making sure that we have good home domestic supply, and looking, as I said about moving faster on those kind of things like wind and solar that can help us with our high cost of natural gas.”

In other words, no.

The point was underlined by Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, R-Texas, who said Democrats are not even permitting debate on legislation and amendments designed to increase the supply of oil and gasoline to U.S. consumers.

“Today, the appropriations markup that was going to include amendments that would open up the outer continental shelf and maybe even shale in Colorado and Utah was canceled,” she told the same Bloomberg interviewer. “It wasn’t postponed, it was canceled. So that indicates to me that the majority is not going to try to have an open debate, but I hope I’m wrong. If they have an open debate, and we’re allowed to have amendments, and we have a balanced plan that includes production in all the sectors, then I believe we can meet this problem in a bipartisan way, and that’s what we should be doing for America.”

WND’s Joseph Farah is spearheading a grassroots battle to flood Congress – and particularly the Democratic leadership – with e-mails, phone calls, letters and text messages demanding action that can lead the country in the direction of energy independence.

“Right now, that means lifting the moratorium,” he says. “That’s the first step. If we can’t agree on that as Americans today, then we are in for a long period of national economic decline. If we can’t push Congress to do the right thing with even a strong majority of Democrats behind us, then this country is simply no longer a place where the will of the people means anything.”

Farah’s goal is to force Congress to act in the next two months – before it adjourns for the year.

“There’s an election coming up one month after that adjournment date and even the most entrenched incumbents know how sensitive this issue is,” says Farah. “Now is the time to let them hear you.”

Farah’s plan is simple: “I want to bring Congress to its knees,” he says. “I want to melt down their phones. I want to flood their e-mail boxes. I want to hold them as political hostages. The ransom demand is to unleash the free market to begin exploring and pumping domestic crude oil and getting it to market as fast as possible. We’ve got two months to make our voices heard. Let’s make history by bringing this recalcitrant body of elitists into compliance with the will of the people and the rule of law.”

After eagerly waiting for someone else to take the lead on demanding action of Congress, Farah came to the conclusion no one else was going to do it.

“We’re running out of time,” Farah says. “If we let these rascals, these scoundrels, leave town before they lift all their ridiculous bans and restrictions on drilling for domestic oil, this country is headed for a major recession. Even worse, we’ll head into a new year and a new presidency with the Washington elite thinking they put one over on us again.”

Farah says the only thing that can prevent the disaster of gasoline prices of $6, $7, even $8 a gallon in the near future is a general uprising of the American people.

Besides the call to action, Farah is also devoting the current issue of Whistleblower magazine, the monthly print complement to WND, to the critical topic of “the energy independence revolution.”

“It’s time to stop business as usual,” he says. “Every day, you need to make some phone calls, you need to write some emails, you need to use Skype and text messages and even send some letters through the Post Office. This grass-roots movement has to build steadily for the next two months. We cannot allow Congress to adjourn without lifting the ban on drilling in ANWR, offshore and on public lands under which we know there are vast reserves of oil.”

Farah says it’s a national emergency and needs to be treated as such.

“I hope radio talk show hosts across the country will embrace this bipartisan, non-partisan movement,” he says. “There is no question in my mind this is what the American people want. Now it’s just time for them to impose their will on their elected representatives who, in their chauffeured limousines and taxpayer-supported travel, are hopelessly out of touch with their constituents, with people who are finding it difficult to make ends meet.”

Farah says he is convinced Congress will act only if the people steamroll members into action. He points to the way the Dubai port deal and so-called “comprehensive immigration reform” were killed by popular uprisings in recent years.

“We can make this happen, again,” he says. “But this time, we won’t just be stopping something bad from happening. We will be doing something that is very good for the country – something that will improve the lives of all of us, something that will improve national security, something vital for the future of the nation.”

Congress is set to adjourn in late September.

“I’m going to do everything in my power to push Congress into action in the next two months,” Farah says. “I know I can’t do it by myself. But I know if the American people get mobilized nothing can stop them. You have to let members of Congress know you are serious. You have to persuade them and their staffs they are not returning to Washington next year if they fail to act in America’s interest before they leave town.”

Before then, you can reach members of the House by calling 202-224-3121 or 202-225-1904. The official House website contains web pages for all members and includes email addresses for most.

You can reach members of the U.S. Senate by calling 202-225-6827. The official Senate website also contains web pages for all members and includes email address for some.

Terrorists’ assignment: Protect Barack Obama

‘Maybe the Israelis will try something,’ hints militant bodyguard

JERUSALEM – Members of the most active West Bank terror organization are set to serve in security forces being deployed to protect Sen. Barack Obama during his trip to the West Bank tomorrow, WND has learned.

Obama is due to visit Israeli officials in Jerusalem and leaders of the Palestinian Authority in the West Bank city of Ramallah as part of a wider Middle Eastern and European tour that includes Jordan, France and Germany.

According to security officials coordinating deployments of forces with the PA for Obama’s Ramallah visit, members of the Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigades, Fatah’s declared military wing, have been called upon by the PA to participate in the protection of Obama, particularly in securing the perimeter during a scheduled meeting with PA President Mahmoud Abbas.

The Brigades is listed as a terror organization by the U.S. State Department. The group took credit along with the Islamic Jihad terror organization for every suicide bombing in Israel between 2005 and 2006 and is responsible for thousands of shootings and rocket firings. Statistically, the Al Aqsa Brigades perpetuated more terrorism from the West Bank than Hamas, according to the Israeli Defense Forces.

Brigades leaders, speaking to WND on condition of anonymity, confirmed they will participate in protecting Obama as official members of the PA’s security forces.

Many Brigades members, including the group’s chiefs, serve openly in Fatah’s Force 17 presidential guard units and the Palestinian Preventative Security Services; hundreds of Force 17 and Preventative officers are slated to secure Ramallah during Obama’s visit there.

The Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigades members are slated to serve in a third ring of security forces patrolling the periphery of Abbas’ Ramallah compound during the Palestinian leader’s meeting with Obama.

The Israeli Defense Forces, working with U.S. security coordinators, will protect the main West Bank highway Obama’s convoy will use to approach Ramallah. Security for Obama will be largely turned over to the Palestinians once he enters Ramallah, although security plans are being heavily coordinated with the U.S.

Various high-profile Al Aqsa Brigades terrorists serve in Fatah’s security forces, including those in Ramallah. The current chief of Fatah’s Force 17, Abu Hayyet, is accused by Israel of planning or involvement in at least 10 deadly terror attacks, according to Israeli security officials.

Abbas previously appointed senior Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigades leader Mahmoud Damra as commander of Force 17, a major, U.S.-financed Fatah security force. Damra, who was arrested by Israel last November, was on the Jewish state’s most-wanted list of terrorists.

The chief of the Brigades in Ramallah also serves in the Preventative Security Services.

Both Israeli and Palestinian security officials, speaking to WND, said there was no known threat to Obama.

Al Aqsa Brigades members doubling as PA security officers previously participated in security for other visiting U.S. officials without incident.

One Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigades member who doubles as a PA security force officer and who is set to protect Obama, joked if there was any threat to the presidential candidate it will come from Israel:

“Maybe the Israelis will try something because of Obama’s policy on Israel, which the Zionists don’t like, but we will certainly protect Obama. We are professional security forces,” the Al Aqsa member said.

The information Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigades members will protect Obama comes after Israel announced last week it arrested six Arabs who allegedly were plotting to assassinate President Bush on behalf of al-Qaida.

Israel’s Shin Bet Security Services released for publication that it had arrested six Arabs – two of them Israeli citizens and the other four Palestinian residents of eastern Jerusalem – for attempting to set up an al-Qaida cell with plans to shoot down Bush’s helicopter during the president’s recent visit to Israel.

« A worker takes the water level of the Sea of Galilee, which is rapidly declining.

Israel: Another Potential Catastrophe

July 21, 2008 | From

Four years of consecutive drought in Israel has sent its water economy to the brink of catastrophe. Is Israel under a weather curse?

Israel’s Water Authority authorized emergency plans on July 8 to combat the nation’s worst water crisis in recorded history. A severe lack of rainfall is causing the nation’s primary sources of fresh water to reach dangerously low levels.

Take, for example, Israel’s main source of fresh water, the Sea of Galilee. Also known as Lake Kinneret, the lake supplies up to 30 percent of Israel’s potable water. Two weeks ago, the Kinneret dropped below its bottom red line—the water level at which it is recommended to stop pumping from the water source. And Water Authority head Uri Shani predicts the lake will reach its black line by December of this year. When a water source falls under its black line, the source will suffer serious, possibly irreversible, damage and the quality of the water declines.

Israel’s two other main water sources are in serious trouble too. The Coastal Aquifer is already below its black line and in danger of being contaminated by salt water from the Mediterranean. Then there is the Mountain Aquifer. Located behind the mountains of Judea and Samaria, this aquifer is a meter below its red line and is expected to reach its black line by the end of this year as well.

So all three of Israel’s main natural water sources are in jeopardy, but the government has no choice but to continue pumping. Faced with a growing demand for water from its citizens and the Palestinians, and a responsibility to supply Jordan with 500 million cubic meters of water annually, Israel is taking some drastic measures to ameliorate the crisis.

The steps, which will most likely take effect next year, consist of nearly doubling the price of water for public and domestic use, prohibiting the watering of grass, shrinking the allocation of fresh water for agriculture (while boosting efforts to reclaim sewage water for agricultural purposes), and a public relations campaign to encourage water conservation. Shani warned these measures will dry out large areas of cultivation, possibly causing food shortages and food price increases.

The emergency plan also includes pumping water from sources that feed Lake Kinneret (water that is supposed to reach the Kinneret by 2010), purifying contaminated wells, and increasing output from desalination plants as well as building new ones. These projects will cost Israel 12 billion shekels over a period of five years.

But the worse news the Water Authority had to share was that the water crisis is expected to last a few more years, and next year is predicted to be even worse.

Some water experts blame the government’s mismanagement of the water resources. While this has its role in the crisis, four straight years of drought is hard to simply push aside. Last year’s winter rainfall (winter is Israel’s rainy season) yielded only 65 percent of the long-term average. As Water Authority Spokesman Uri Schor put it, “There just isn’t any water.”

Israel is not the only country suffering from drought. Australia is afflicted with drought and portions of the country are experiencing severe water restrictions. California’s drought and heat waves created the perfect situation for the state to catch on fire.

God is trying to get a lesson across to these nations. Your Bible says God controls the weather and that He has the power to give rain in due season. There is a real reason why Israel, America and Australia are suffering from drought.

In a world panicking about global warming, it may be hard to see God’s presence in the out-of-control weather patterns. But before you dismiss the notion that weather is a function of God’s will and power, read “Healing Our Sick Land.” •

Nazi-hunter says he’s closing in on ‘Dr. Death’

Efraim Zuroff, head of the Israeli branch of the Simon Wiesenthal Center, told a news conference his mission to southern reaches of Americas led him to at least four people who claim to have seen former concentration camp physician Aribert Heim in past 45 days

The world’s top Nazi-hunter said Thursday he’s made progress in finding 94-year-old “Doctor Death,” a former concentration camp physician accused of torturing Jewish prisoners as they died and who may have been living for decades in Argentina or Chile.

Efraim Zuroff, head of the Israeli branch of the Simon Wiesenthal Center, told a news conference that his mission to the southern reaches of the Americas led him to at least four people who claim to have seen Aribert Heim in the past 45 days.

Top Nazi hunter at Jewish human rights organization accuses German authorities of obstructing hunt for former SS doctor Aribert Heim

Full story
“We’re better off than before we came,” Zuroff said. “That doesn’t guarantee Heim’s capture, but I’m hopeful.”

Zuroff launched the investigation last week in the southern Chilean fishing town of Puerto Montt, where Heim’s daughter lives, although she was reportedly overseas at the time.

Zuroff said during the past three years she has traveled several times to the Patagonian town of San Carlos de Bariloche in Argentina, which he visited this week. The Nazi hunter believes Heim is hiding out somewhere between the two towns, separated by the Andes mountain range.

“There is increasing pressure on Heim and on his family,” Zuroff said Thursday. “People under pressure make mistakes,” he added.

Zuroff told The Associated Press that the Puerto Montt trip was a “turning point” because he was able to speak face-to-face for the first time with acquaintances of Heim’s daughter and raise awareness among locals.

“These are people who brought us specific details that gives us something concrete to latch onto,” said Sergio Widder, the center’s Latin American representative. He declined to elaborate.

Heim was indicted in Germany after World War II on charges he murdered hundreds of inmates at the Mauthausen concentration camp in 1941. The Wiesenthal center says he injected the corrosive poison phenol directly into the hearts of many and used “other torturous killing methods.”

Zuroff says Heim’s children have made no claim to a bank account with 1.2 million euros ($1.6 million) and other investments in Heim’s name. To do that, they would have to produce proof that “Doctor Death” is dead.

He said he’s been tracking recent requests by Heim’s lawyers for legal documents related to his estate that “would have no value if he is dead.” He would not give details.

Tops list of most-wanted Nazi war criminals

A reward of 315,000 euros ($495,000) is being offered jointly by the center, the German and Austrian governments and a private donor for information leading to his capture. Heim tops the Wiesenthal Center’s list of most-wanted Nazi war criminals.

Zuroff met Thursday morning with Argentine Justice Minister Anibal Fernandez, who said the government will facilitate Heim’s arrest and extradition if Heim is found in the country.

Although World War II ended more than 60 years ago, the center continues to take on new cases as Nazi sightings surface. Between March 2007 and 2008, the Wiesenthal Center opened 202 new investigations, Zuroff said.

The South American probe is part of the Jewish human rights organization’s “Operation: Last Chance” – an effort to bring aging war criminals to justice before they die. If alive, Heim would be 94.

Answering critics who say Heim’s age undermines the validity of the hunt, Zuroff said to “keep in mind what he did when was a very young person.”

“If we put a limit on age, in a practical sense that means we’re saying you can get away with genocide, which is morally outrageous,” he added.

After World War II, Heim was held for two and a half years by the United States military but was released without being tried.

He disappeared in 1962 after he was tipped off that German authorities were about to indict him, Zuroff said.
